This land was home to the Northern Thai people. It existed from the 13th century until the 18th century. The kingdom grew from older groups of people. It became a strong power in the 1400s. At that time, it even rivaled the Ayutthaya Kingdom. This was a very important time for the region.

Building the kingdom took many steps and moves. A leader named Mangrai started the unified kingdom. He was the 25th king of Ngoenyang. In 1262, he moved his capital to Chiang Rai. He later moved again because of heavy flooding. He built a place called Wiang Kum Kam in 1286. Finally, in 1296, he founded Chiang Mai.

Chiang Mai became the main capital for many years.

The history of Lan Na shows many different rulers. After Mangrai died in 1311, his son Grama took over. Later, King Phayu moved the capital back to Chiang Mai. He even built the Wat Phra Singh temple there. One of the most powerful leaders was King Tilokaraj. He ruled from 1441 to 1487. He was a great supporter of Buddhism. He even held a big Buddhist Council in 1477.

Things became difficult for Lan Na after Tilokaraj. Fighting between family members made the kingdom weak. Powerful neighbors like the Burmese began to move in. In 1558, the Burmese took control of the land. This rule lasted for a very long time. Some local kings had a little freedom. Others had to follow Burmese rules and pay taxes. There were many wars during these years. The people often had to choose between different rulers.

Eventually, Lan Na changed into what we know today. In 1775, local chiefs left Burmese control. They joined Siam to fight a war. By 1776, King Taksin of Siam gained control.

Later, the Siamese state began to absorb the kingdom. In 1874, they reorganized it as Monthon Phayap. By 1909, Lan Na was no longer an independent state. It became a part of the modern nation of Thailand.
