The Konbaung dynasty was the last group of kings to rule Burma. It lasted from 1752 until 1885. This era is often called the Third Burmese Empire. The kings of this time helped build the foundations of modern Myanmar. They worked to organize the land and its people. They also grew the empire to be very large.

The dynasty worked through many different ways to manage its land. The kingdom was divided into many smaller parts called provinces. These were known as myo. Each province had a leader called a Myosa. These leaders were often part of the royal family. They collected money for the royal treasury. The government also had a group called the Hluttaw. This group helped the king make laws and handle court matters.

This great empire began with a man named Alaungpaya. He was once a village chief. In 1752, he started a movement to challenge the leaders of the time. By 1759, his forces had reunited much of Burma. His son, Hsinbyushin, took the throne after a short reign by his brother. Hsinbyushin continued to grow the empire through many battles. He even fought against the Qing dynasty of China.

History shows that the Konbaung kings were very busy with many tasks. They fought four successful wars against China to protect their land. They also had long wars with the kingdom of Siam. Between 1760 and 1855, the two lands fought many battles. They eventually traded some land to find peace. In the west, King Bodawpaya added Arakan and Manipur to the empire. These many events helped set the borders for the country we see today.

Later kings tried to make the country more modern. King Mindon was a progressive leader who wanted change. He and his brother built factories to make new goods. In 1857, he started using silver coins for money. He also tried to change how taxes were paid. However, these changes were not enough to stop the British Empire. After three wars, the British took control in 1885. They sent the last king, Thibaw, away to India.
