He was born Maung Lwin in 1808 to King Tharrawaddy Min and Queen Chandra Mata Mahay. Mindon was a very religious man who studied at a monastic college. During his time, the British Empire was gaining control of much of the land. This caused many hard jobs for the kingdom, like losing trade and food. Mindon wanted to protect his country and make it stronger. He worked hard to modernize his kingdom during his long reign.

Taking the throne was not easy for Mindon. He had to fight his half-brother, King Pagan, to become leader. Mindon had a loyal brother named Kanaung Mintha who helped him. They moved to the city of Shwebo to stay safe during a plot. Eventually, they walked into the capital city of Ava without any fight. Mindon became king on February 18, 1853.

He ruled alongside his brother Kanaung. Kanaung was in charge of the army and new technology. They worked as a team to lead the people. This joint rule helped the kingdom stay organized.

Mindon made many big changes to help his country grow. He founded the royal capital of Mandalay in 1857.

He sent scholars to visit France, Italy, the United States, and Great Britain. They wanted to learn about the Industrial Revolution and new machines. Mindon also introduced the first machine-struck coins to Burma.

He changed how the government worked by giving officials salaries. He also improved the army and created new police forces. These reforms helped the kingdom function in a new way.

Religion was a very important part of Mindon's life. He was a devoted Buddhist who built many monasteries. In 1868, he created the world's largest book.

It was called the Tipitaka and had 729 pages. He carved the words into marble slabs at the Kuthodaw Pagoda. In 1871, he held the Fifth Buddhist Council in Mandalay. He even sent a beautiful diamond crown to the Shwedagon Pagoda. He was known for being very kind to different religions.

Life in the palace could be very difficult and sad. In 1866, two of Mindon's sons tried to take over the palace. This was a violent event that led to the death of Prince Kanaung. After Mindon died in 1878, there was a big struggle for power. One queen, Hsinbyumashin, ordered the deaths of many royal family members. She wanted her daughter and son-in-law to become the next leaders. Eventually, Mindon's son Thibaw became king.

Not long after, the British took full control of Burma. Mindon is still remembered today as a very important leader.
