He belonged to the Chakri dynasty and ruled from 1851 until 1868. Mongkut is often called 'the Father of Science and Technology' in his country. He lived during a time when Western nations were expanding into new lands. This brought new ideas and pressures to Siam. Mongkut worked hard to modernize his nation. He wanted Siam to be strong and respected by the world.

Before he became king, Mongkut lived a very different life. In 1824, he became a Buddhist monk. He stayed in the monkhood for 27 years. During this time, he traveled around the country. He saw how different monks followed religious rules. He wanted to make sure Buddhism was practiced correctly. This led him to start a new group called the Dhammayut sect.

He also used this time to study new subjects. He learned English, Latin, and astronomy from missionaries and sailors. He even became friends with a Catholic vicar named Pallegoix.

When Mongkut became king in 1851, he made many big changes. He was 47 years old when he left his life as a monk. He chose to crown his brother, Prince Chutamani, as a second king. This brother was known as King Pinklao.

Mongkut also worked with powerful noble families like the House of Bunnag. These leaders helped him run the country. He even asked his nobles to wear shirts at court. He did this so Siam would look modern to Western visitors.

Mongkut was a very talented scientist and mathematician. He studied how the Earth worked and learned it was round. This was a big change from older ideas in Siam. He used science to help his people understand the world. One of his most famous moments was in 1868. He accurately predicted a total solar eclipse.

Many people today know about Mongkut through stories and films. A famous musical called 'The King and I' tells a story about his time. An actor named Yul Brynner played the king in a 1956 movie. This performance won an Academy Award in 1957.
