His name has a special meaning in Thai. His uncle, King Vajiravudh, gave him a name that means "the joy of Mahidol." Ananda was a very special prince because he was the first Thai king born outside of Thailand. He was born in Heidelberg, Germany, to Prince Mahidol Adulyadej and Mom Sangwan.

Ananda's life changed a lot when he was a young boy. In 1935, his uncle, King Prajadhipok, decided to step down from the throne. The government and the National Assembly chose nine-year-old Ananda to be the new king. Because he was still a child, he could not rule the country alone. A group of leaders called regents were chosen to help manage things for him. Ananda moved to Switzerland to live and study while he was king.

While Ananda was away, a huge war called World War II began. In 1941, Japan invaded Thailand. This made Thailand part of an alliance with Japan. Ananda remained in Switzerland to finish his education during these difficult years. He studied law at the University of Lausanne. After the war ended in 1945, Ananda finally returned to his home in Thailand. He arrived in December 1945 with a law degree.

When he returned, the Thai people were very happy to see their king. He worked hard to be a good leader for everyone. One famous thing he did was visit Sampheng Lane in Chinatown. This visit helped people of different backgrounds get along better after the war.

Some visitors noticed that the young king seemed a bit nervous or lonely. A British leader named Louis Mountbatten even thought the king looked very small and frightened in his fancy decorations.

A very sad mystery happened at the end of his reign. In June 1946, Ananda was found shot dead in his bed. He was staying at the Boromphiman Throne Hall inside the Grand Palace.

At first, people thought it might have been an accident. However, medical experts later ruled that it was a murder. This event caused a lot of confusion and many arguments. After he died, his brother Bhumibol Adulyadej became the next king.
