He was born on April 17, 1734, in the city of Ayutthaya. His father came from the Teochew people in China. His mother was of Mon and Tai descent. As a young boy, he lived in a Buddhist monastery. There, he studied many different languages. He learned Hokkien-Chinese, Filipino, and several Indian languages. This helped him become a very smart leader later in life.

In 1767, a big war changed everything for the land of Siam.

The city of Ayutthaya was destroyed by invaders from Burma. Taksin led 500 followers to escape the fighting. He went to the east coast to build a new army. He captured the town of Chanthaburi in June 1767. Then, he used 100 ships and 5,000 troops to sail up the river. He won a big battle at Pho Sam Ton and drove the invaders away.

Taksin had to find a new place for his capital city.

He chose a town called Thonburi. Ayutthaya was too damaged to use right away. Thonburi was closer to the sea, which made it easier to defend. It was also a smaller town that his soldiers could protect easily. If an enemy attacked, his troops could quickly sail away to Chanthaburi. He was crowned King of Siam at Thonburi Palace on December 28, 1767.

Being a king was a very hard job for Taksin.

He spent much of his time fighting to keep the country safe. He fought to stop new invasions and to bring different lands together. However, he did more than just lead in war. He worked hard on the economy and the welfare of his people. He built new roads and dug canals to help everyone. He also helped restore beautiful temples and encouraged art and books.

Taksin ruled from 1767 until 1782.

Because of all the work he did to save his country, people call him Maharat. This is a title that means "the Great." He is remembered as a brave and organized leader.
