He was the 27th monarch of this strong land. He ruled from 1656 until 1688. His time as king was a very busy and successful era. Many different nations visited his kingdom during these years. They came from places like Persia, China, and even far-away Europe.

This era was a time of great trade and new friendships.

Narai's journey to the throne was a very difficult path. He was born in 1632 to King Prasat Thong. A story says that when he was a baby, he briefly appeared to have four arms. Because of this, his family gave him the name Narai. After his father died in 1656, his brother became king first. However, Narai worked with others to take control of the palace. He eventually became the king after a struggle with his uncle.

As king, Narai wanted to balance the power of many different groups. He dealt with the Dutch, the English, and the Chinese. He even led a large army of 60,000 people into Burma. This was part of a war from 1662 to 1664. He also built a new palace at a place called Lopburi. He used help from French engineers to build it. This palace was special because it had very wide windows.

Narai also sent many missions to meet other world leaders. He sent messengers to France, England, and even the Vatican.

One famous group was led by Kosa Pan in 1686. They traveled all the way to France to meet King Louis XIV. This helped the two lands learn about each other. However, some of these trips were very dangerous. At least two groups of messengers were lost at sea. These connections helped historians learn about life in the 1600s.

In his later years, Narai gave a lot of power to a Greek man named Constantine Phaulkon. Phaulkon became a very close counselor to the king. Because of Phaulkon, many French soldiers and priests came to Siam. This caused many local leaders to feel upset. They did not like how much influence the foreigners had. This tension led to a revolution in 1688. This change happened right at the end of Narai's reign.
