Siam is the land we now call Thailand. He was the fifth king of the Chakri dynasty. His title was Rama V. He lived from 1853 to 1910. Chulalongkorn wanted to make his country modern and strong. He did this to keep Siam independent. At that time, big European empires were taking over nearby lands. He worked hard to make sure this did not happen to Siam.

Chulalongkorn had a very busy education. From age seven, he studied many traditional things. He learned about Buddhism and Siamese writing. He also studied history and how to lead an army. He even became a monk for six months in 1866.

He also learned from Western teachers. These teachers taught him science, English, and French. His father, King Mongkut, helped him learn too. The King showed him how to handle the daily business of ruling. This helped him prepare for his future job.

In 1868, Chulalongkorn became king at only 15 years old.

His father died from malaria after a trip to see a solar eclipse. Because he was young, a group of leaders ruled for him first. This was called a regency. A man named Sri Suriyawongse led this group. Chulalongkorn was officially crowned Rama V in 1873. He spent time traveling to places like Singapore and India. He wanted to see how other places were run. These trips gave him many new ideas for Siam.

Chulalongkorn made many big changes to how the country worked. He created an office to collect taxes in 1873. This helped the king have more control over money. He also set up a Council of State to help him make laws.

To make the military stronger, he started a Royal Military Academy in 1888. He also changed the government into different ministries. This made the government more organized. He even worked to change the legal system. He replaced old, harsh ways of punishment with new laws. A Belgian advisor helped him with these new rules.

His work helped Siam stay a free country. He faced many hard jobs during his reign. There were conflicts with the French and the British. There were also battles against groups called the Haw.

Even with these troubles, he kept moving Siam forward. He even sent his sons to Europe to learn more. Because he cared so much for his people, they gave him a special name. They called him Phra Piya Maharat. This means the Great Beloved King.
