Setthathirath was a very important leader in Lao history. He ruled the kingdom of Lan Xang during a difficult time. He was also the King of Lan Na for a period. His father was King Photisarath of Lan Xang. Setthathirath was a famous builder of many religious sites. He created many Buddhist monuments for his people to see. These included Wat Xieng Thong in Luang Prabang and the Pha That Luang in Vientiane. He also built the Haw Phra Kaew to hold the sacred Emerald Buddha.

His rise to power involved many different steps. First, he was crowned King of Lan Na in 1546. This happened after his grandfather, King Ketklao, died without a male heir. High officials and monks agreed to give the throne to him. Later, he had to secure his rule in Lan Xang. He returned home after his father died to protect his throne. He brought sacred images with him to show his authority. This helped him lead both the Lanna and Lan Xang kingdoms.

Setthathirath made big changes to how his kingdom was run. In 1560, he moved the capital from Luang Prabang to Viangchan. This city remained the capital for the next 250 years. To prepare for this, he started a huge building program. He built a large palace and made city defenses stronger. He also worked to renovate the That Luang monument. These projects helped make Viangchan a strong center for his people.

He spent many years defending his land from invaders. A Burmese ruler named Bayinnaung tried to conquer his kingdoms. Setthathirath used smart ways to fight back. He organized guerrilla warfare, which means small groups of soldiers used surprise attacks. This made it very hard for the Burmese troops to stay. In 1565, the Burmese were forced to retreat from Lan Xang. In 1570, Setthathirath even led a counterattack against them. His soldiers took 100 elephants and many prisoners during that fight.

His life ended in a sad and sudden way. In 1571, a group of people worked together to kill him. He was only 37 years old at the time. Because his son was just a small child, the country became unstable. Many different leaders fought for control for many years. His son, Prince Noi Hno Muang Keo Koumane, was eventually released from Burma. The prince returned to Vientiane and was crowned king in 1591. He worked hard to make his land independent again.
