Suryavarman II was a very powerful ruler of the Khmer Empire. He reigned from the year 1113 until his death around 1150. Most people know him today as the builder of Angkor Wat. This is the largest Hindu temple in the entire world.

He was a leader who changed how his empire functioned. He worked to bring many different lands back under one rule. Historians often rank him as one of the empire's greatest kings. His life was filled with big building projects and many wars.

To become king, the young prince had to work very hard. He grew up on a provincial estate in the late 1090s. At that time, the central government was becoming weak. He had to compete with other people for the throne. He even had to fight a rival from a different family line. An old inscription says he fought a terrible battle to win. He eventually took the throne in 1113. A priest named Divakarapandita led the royal ceremonies for him.

Suryavarman II was a very active leader in many ways. He led large armies into many different military campaigns. He tried to attack lands like Champa and Dai Viet. In 1128, he led 20,000 soldiers against Dai Viet. He also used diplomacy to talk with other strong lands. He sent an embassy of 14 people to visit China. In 1116, he also sent a mission to India. These actions helped him manage his huge empire.

His most famous work is the amazing Angkor Wat temple. He built it to honor the Hindu god Vishnu. This was different because most kings honored the god Shiva. The temple has five tall towers that look like mountains. It has more than 1,860 carvings of heavenly nymphs called apsaras.

You can also see carvings of his own life there. One carving shows him sitting on a beautiful wooden seat. It shows his court with many attendants and priests. These carvings help us see what life was like then.

The king's life came to an end around the year 1150. Some records say he died during a war in Champa. Other records suggest he died in the capital at Angkor. After he died, his cousin Dharanindravan II became the new king. This started a time when the empire had many disagreements. People later gave him the name Paramavishnuloka to honor him. This name means he entered the heavenly world of Vishnu. His great temples still stand for people to see today.
