He was the son of King Dharanindravarman II and Queen Sri Jayarajacudamani. Most Khmer kings before him followed different traditions. Jayavarman VII was the first king to be devoted to Buddhism. He believed in a way of life called Mahayana Buddhism. This belief shaped how he treated all his people. He wanted to help them with their physical and spiritual needs. Historians say he was the most powerful of all Khmer monarchs.

His path to the throne began during a very difficult time. In 1177, invaders from Champa attacked the Khmer capital. They sailed up the Mekong River and across Lake Tonlé Sap. The invaders took the capital and killed King Tribhuvanadityavarman. The Chams stayed in Cambodia for four years. Jayavarman VII was in his mid-50s when he led an army to fight back.

He helped drive the invaders out between 1177 and 1181. After he fixed the disorder in the capital, he was crowned king in 1181. He also helped win a battle against the Kingdom of Malyang.

Jayavarman VII spent his 37-year reign building many things. He wanted to make life better for everyone in his empire. He built 102 hospitals to care for the sick. He also built 121 rest houses for people traveling on long trips.

These rest houses were placed every 15 kilometers along raised highways. He even built large reservoirs to hold water. An inscription says he felt the pain of his subjects as his own. This shows how much he cared about his people's suffering.

He also created many beautiful and grand monuments. He built the temple of Ta Prohm in 1186 to honor his mother. At one time, 80,000 people worked to take care of that temple. He built Preah Khan to honor his father.

His most famous work was the Bayon temple. This temple sits in the center of a new city called Angkor Thom. The walls of the Bayon have carvings called bas reliefs. These carvings show battles and scenes of everyday life. They show people cooking, trading, and even traveling with oxcarts.

Jayavarman VII left a legacy that people still study today. He expanded his empire from the Mekong Valley all the way to the Kra Isthmus. He even sent stone images of the Buddha to 23 different towns. His life is still remembered in many ways. You can find his likeness in museums and even in video games.
