Rajendra expanded his lands through many different campaigns. First, he fought on the Indian mainland. He led armies against the Western Chalukyas and the rulers of Anuradhapura. He also won battles against the Chera and Pandiya states. In 1016, he sent a naval force to Sri Lanka. He successfully brought the Ruhuna Kingdom under his rule. Later, he captured the Maldives and the Lakshadweep islands in 1018. These islands became important naval bases for his empire.

His reach went even further across the Indian Ocean. In 1023, Rajendra sent a large fleet of ships to South-East Asia. His warriors captured Srivijaya in southern Sumatra. The fleet also took control of parts of Malaysia and Thailand. He even reached the city of Magpapaalam in Myanmar. These victories helped the Cholas control the Strait of Malacca. This gave them great power over the sea. Because of these wins, he took new titles like Kadaremkondaan.

Rajendra used his wealth to build amazing things. He led an expedition to the Ganges river in the north. This expedition captured much wealth from the Pala dynasty. He used this money to build a new capital city. The city was named Gangaikonda Cholapuram. It featured a huge lake called the Chola Gangam. This tank held holy water from the Ganges river. He also built the massive Gangaikonda Cholaeswarem temple. This temple has one of the largest Shiva Lingams in the world.

Trade was a very important part of his empire. New systems called "emporia" helped goods move easily. This meant goods were sent out based on what people wanted. The Cholas traded spices with Arabia and North Africa. They also traded with the Khmer Empire and Song China. This helped the empire stay rich and supported the military. Rajendra was a follower of Shaivism, but he was also kind to others. He welcomed Buddhism and built several stupas. His son, Rajadhiraja I, ruled after him in 1044.
