History tells us about the Cholas in several different stages. First came the Early Cholas mentioned in ancient Tamil literature. These stories tell of kings and poets from a long time ago. There was a time of change when the Cholas lost much of their power. During this time, other groups like the Kalabhras and Pallavas ruled the land. Some Chola families moved to the Telugu country to live as chieftains. They waited for many years to become independent rulers again.

In the year 848, a man named Vijayalaya started a new era. This began the time of the Imperial Cholas.

They grew very strong through many years of leadership. Kings like Aditya I and Parantaka I helped the empire expand. They won battles against groups like the Pallavas and the Pandyas. This helped the Cholas become a powerhouse in South Asia. They became very important for trade and culture in the region.

The empire reached its highest peak in the 11th century.
