Vijayalaya Chola was a very important leader in history. He was the founder of the Imperial Chola Dynasty. This was a new era for the Chola people. He ruled from the year 848 to 871. His lands were located north of the Kaveri River. He was a descendant of a famous king named Karikala Chola.

Before Vijayalaya, the Cholas went through a dark period. A group called the Kalabhras had invaded their land. This caused the Cholas to almost disappear from their home. Some Chola branches moved to Telugu lands to stay safe. These people were known as the Telugu Chodas. They lived as chieftains under the Pallava rulers. It took three hundred years before the Cholas could rise again.

Vijayalaya found a way to gain power during a struggle. The Pallavas and the Pandyas were fighting for control. This war gave Vijayalaya a chance to act. He captured the city of Thanjavur from Elango Mutharaiyar. This man was the last ruler of the Mutharaiyar dynasty. Vijayalaya also had help from a man named Sattan Paliyilli.

Vijayalaya did many things to build his new kingdom. He made Thanjavur his capital city. He built a temple there for the goddess Nisumbhasudani. Some records say he even renovated the city itself. In 852 CE, he fought a war against the Pandyas. He won that battle and grew his influence. Later, a Pandyan king named Varagunavarman II tried to stop him.

History tells us many details about his life through old records. The Tiruvalangadu plates describe his capture of Thanjavur. The Kanyakumari inscription also mentions his work in the city. His father may have been a man named Srikantha. Some scholars think Srikantha was also called Ottriyuran or Mayilayarkon. Vijayalaya's son, Aditya Chola I, took over after him. He helped turn the kingdom into a huge empire.
