It sits in Western Tamil Nadu between the Kalrayan and Pachaimalai Hills. The Eastern Ghats mountain range surrounds the area. A river called the Thirumanimutharu flows right through the city. This river starts in the Shevaroy Hills and later joins the Kaveri River. The land here is rocky and has many small hills. Most of the ground has red soil, but some parts have black soil.

The weather in Salem is tropical and can feel very humid. Summers last from March to May, and the hottest days are in April. When the monsoon rains arrive in mid-June, the temperature begins to drop. The region gets rain from two different monsoon seasons. The coolest months are from November to February. In December, the temperature reaches its lowest average. This cycle of heat and rain helps the local plants grow.

Salem has a very long and interesting history. During the Sangam period, between the 1st and 4th centuries CE, it was part of the Chera Empire. People in Salem traded with the Roman Empire a long time ago. Archaeologists even found Roman coins from the time of Emperor Tiberius here. Over many centuries, many different groups ruled the land. These included the Pandyas, Pallavas, Cholas, and Hoysalas. Later, the Vijayanagara Empire and the Madurai Nayaks held power. In the late 1700s, the Kingdom of Mysore took control. Eventually, the British East India Company arrived after the Anglo-Mysore Wars.

Today, Salem is a major center for industry and work. It is famous for making steel at the Salem Steel Plant. This plant was started in 1981 and makes many types of steel alloys.
