Tiruppur

geography Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Tiruppur is a large and busy city in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It sits right on the banks of the Noyyal River. This city is the capital of the Tiruppur district. It is actually the fourth largest city in its state. The name might come from an old story in the Mahabharata. Some say it means "the place where things were returned."

Many different groups have ruled this land over many years. Long ago, the Cheras ruled during the Sangam period. Later, the Pandyas, Cholas, and the Vijayanagara Empire all held power here. In the 1700s, the Kingdom of Mysore ruled the area. After some wars, the British took control in 1799. After India became independent in 1947, the city was part of the Coimbatore district. Finally, in 2009, Tiruppur became the capital of its own new district.

For a long time, most people in Tiruppur were farmers. They used the fertile sand near the river to grow crops. The soil here is mostly black, which is great for growing cotton. In the 1970s, things began to change very quickly. Many small farms started to turn into textile units. This led to a huge boom in making clothes. Today, the city is a massive hub for the textile industry.

Today, Tiruppur is famous as the knitwear capital of India. There are more than 10,000 garment factories working in the city. These factories employ over 600,000 people. Some of the biggest brands in the world, like Nike and Adidas, get their clothes from here. In the 2021–22 year, the city exported garments worth 4.5 billion USD. This is about 54% of all the textile exports from the whole country.

The weather in Tiruppur is often hot and dry. Summer arrives in March, April, and May. The monsoon brings rain from June to August and again in October. Because there are so many factories, the city has had to work hard to protect its water. In 2015, a court said factories must use a system called zero liquid discharge. This helps stop dyes and chemicals from entering the Noyyal River. Now, Tiruppur is the first textile group in India to reach this goal.
