Tiruppur

geography Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Tiruppur is a big city in Tamil Nadu, India. It sits on the banks of the Noyyal River. The city is the capital of its own district. Long ago, many different kings ruled this land. These included the Cheras, the Cholas, and the Pandyas.

In the past, most people were farmers. They grew crops in the dark, rich soil. Many people believe the name comes from an old story. It may mean "the place where things were returned."

Today, Tiruppur is a very busy place for making clothes. It is known as the knitwear capital of India. There are over 10,000 factories that make garments. These factories make clothes for big brands like Nike and Adidas. In one year, the city sent out 4.5 billion USD worth of clothes to other countries. This is a huge part of India's cloth trade.

The weather is often hot and dry. In the summer, it gets very warm. During the monsoon months, the city gets more rain. This rain helps the land stay green. Because of the many factories, the city must work hard to keep its water clean.
