Vijayalaya Chola was a great leader. He started the Imperial Chola dynasty. This was a new family of kings. He ruled from the year 848 to 871. He lived near the Kaveri river.

Before him, the Chola people had a hard time. A group called the Kalabhras had taken their land. The Cholas almost disappeared for a long time. Some Cholas moved to Telugu lands to stay safe. They were called the Telugu Chodas there.

Vijayalaya found a way to gain power. Two other groups, the Pandyas and Pallavas, were at war. Vijayalaya used this chance to grow. He took the city of Thanjavur. He took it from a ruler named Elango Mutharaiyar.

He made Thanjavur his capital city. He even built a temple there for a goddess. Later, a Pandyan king tried to take his land. Vijayalaya was old and sick by then. He lost his kingdom for a short time. But his family stayed strong. His son, Aditya Chola I, became king next. He helped the empire grow very large.
