Vijayalaya Chola was the foundational figure of the Imperial Chola Dynasty. He ruled from 848 to 871 CE. His territory was located in the region north of the Kaveri River. This dynasty succeeded the Early Cholas, who were a much older group of rulers. Vijayalaya is considered a descendant of the famous Sangam age king, Karikala Chola. His leadership marked the beginning of a new era for the Chola people in South India.

Before Vijayalaya rose to power, the Cholas experienced a period known as a dark age. This era began when the Kalabhras invaded the Tamil lands. The Cholas almost completely disappeared from their native territory during this time. Some branches of the family migrated to Telugu lands to survive. These people were known as the Telugu Chodas. They lived as chieftains under the authority of the Pallava rulers. It took approximately three hundred years of waiting before the Chola line could rise again.

Historians have studied various inscriptions to reconstruct Vijayalaya's family history. The Velanjeri plates identify his father as Ottriyuran. Some scholars believe this name was a title meaning "lord of Thiruottriyur." Thiruottriyur was a prominent Shaivite center near modern Chennai. Another record, the Dalavayapuram copper plate, mentions a leader named Srikantha Chola of Pottapi. This leader was also called Mayilayarkon, or "Lord of Mylapore." Since Thiruottriyur and Mylapore are only 17 kilometers apart, scholars suggest Ottriyuran and Mayilayarkon were the same person. This person was likely the father of Vijayalaya.

Vijayalaya rose to prominence during a time of intense political struggle. In the mid-ninth century, the Pallavas and the Pandyas fought for supremacy in South India. Vijayalaya used this instability to his advantage. He captured the city of Thanjavur from Elango Mutharaiyar. Elango was the final ruler of the Mutharaiyar dynasty. Vijayalaya also received help from a lieutenant named Sattan Paliyilli. Through these actions, he established the Chola empire at Thanjavur.

His military career included significant conflicts with neighboring powers. In 852 CE, Vijayalaya waged war against the Pandyas and defeated them. However, his success faced a later challenge from the Pandyan king Varagunavarman II. The Pallava ruler Nandivarman III had called upon Varagunavarman II to suppress the growing Chola influence. The Pandyan army marched to the north bank of the Kaveri River near Thanjavur. During this period, Vijayalaya was an aging veteran and an invalid. He eventually lost his kingdom to the Pandyas and became a tax-paying king under their reign.

Despite these challenges, Vijayalaya left a lasting mark on the city of Thanjavur. The Tiruvalangadu plates state that he made Thanjavur his capital city. He also built a temple there dedicated to the goddess Nisumbhasudani, also known as Durga. The Kanyakumari inscription mentions that he renovated the city of Tanjore. He also took specific titles during his reign. One title used by later kings was Parakesari. This was likely used to honor their ancestral lineage.

Vijayalaya's legacy was continued by his son, Aditya Chola I. Aditya I laid the foundation for what would become a massive Imperial Chola Empire. The dynasty became so powerful that the Pallavas were eventually wiped out from the Thanjavur region. The rise of the Cholas changed the political map of South India. They moved from being a displaced group to becoming a dominant imperial force. This transition helped end the long period of instability that had followed the Kalabhra invasion.
