Chavda dynasty

history Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Chavda dynasty was a group of rulers in ancient India. They ruled the region of modern-day Gujarat for a long time. Their rule lasted from about 690 to 942 CE.

This dynasty is important because they built a major capital city. They also left behind many stories in old books. These books help us learn about how they lived. Some books were written by a writer named Merutunga. Other historical records come from copperplates and poems.

One of the most famous leaders was a man named Vanraja. He was the son of a king named Jayaśekhara. Stories say Vanraja grew up in the forest. A monk named Śílaguṇasúri saw him as a young boy. The monk thought Vanraja was very skilled at shooting rats. Because of this, the monk thought he should be a king.

Vanraja eventually gained a lot of wealth and horses. He used this to build a strong army and rule.

Vanraja also founded a great city called Aṇahilaváḍa. This city is known today as Patan in Gujarat. He did not pick the spot all by himself. He asked a shepherd named Aṇahila for help. Aṇahila showed him the best place to build. The city was named after the shepherd to honor him.

Vanraja likely became the official king around 765 CE. He ruled for many years and gained support from merchants.

Many kings followed Vanraja in a long line of rulers. His son was Yogaraja, who ruled for about 35 years. After him came Kshemraja, who ruled for 25 years. Other kings included Bhuyada, Virsimha, and Ratnaditya.

There are many different lists of these kings in old books. Some lists have different names or different years. This happens because the old records do not always agree. Even so, the dynasty lasted for about 196 years total.

Eventually, the Chavda dynasty came to an end. The last ruler was a man named Samantsimha. He was also known as Chuyadadeva. Samantsimha did not have any children of his own. Because of this, he adopted his nephew, Mularaja. In 942, Mularaja overthrew him to take control. Mularaja then started a new group called the Chaulukya dynasty. This change marked the end of one era and the start of another.
