The Maitraka dynasty was a group of rulers in western India. They ruled the Kingdom of Valabhi from about 475 to 776 CE. Their home base was a capital city called Vallabhi.

This dynasty began after the Gupta Empire started to decline. A general named Bhaṭārka founded it around 475 CE. He had been a military governor in a place called Saurashtra. At first, the leaders used the title of Senapati, which means general. Later, rulers like Droṇasiṁha began calling themselves Maharaja.

Most of these kings followed a religion called Shaivism. They often used symbols like the bull Nandi or the trident on their coins.

One king, Dharapaṭṭa, was different because he worshipped the sun. Another ruler, Dhruvasena I, followed Vaishnavism. The Maitraka leaders were very tolerant of different beliefs. They gave gifts and land to many different religious groups. During the reign of Dhruvasena I, a Jain council was likely held at Vallabhi. There were also many Buddhist buildings called Viharas in the kingdom.

Many kings in this family were known for being strong or kind. The third ruler was Droṇasiṁha, who became a Maharaja. A famous traveler named Hiuen Tsang visited in 640 CE. He met the ruler Śilāditya I Dharmāditya during his trip. Hiuen Tsang described him as a leader with great skill. He also said the king was very kind and compassionate.

Later, the ruler Kharagraha I ruled lands that included Ujjain. His son, Dhruvasena II, even married the daughter of a leader named Harṣavardhana.

Vallabhi was a very famous place for students to learn. The Maitrakas set up the Vallabhi University. This school was known far and wide for its learning.

People compared it to the famous Nalanda University. Students came from all over the country to study there. They studied both religious and secular subjects. Some students were even Brahmana boys. Graduates from this university often received important jobs in the government. A traveler named I-Tsing also visited and saw this great center of learning.

Over time, the kingdom faced many hard jobs and changes. In the mid-seventh century, the dynasty came under the rule of Harṣa. However, the Maitrakas kept control over their local areas. They became independent again after Harṣa died. Later, the kingdom was weakened by attacks from Arabs coming from the sea.

The dynasty ended around 783 CE. We do not have a clear historical source that says exactly how it ended. Today, more than one hundred temples from this time still exist. Most of these are found along the western coast of Saurashtra.
