He belonged to the Vardhana dynasty. This family ruled from a place called Thanesar. Harsha became a leader during a time when Northern India was split into many small kingdoms. He eventually united many of these areas under his rule. His empire became very large and stretched across northern India. The Narmada River marked the southern edge of his land. He made the city of Kanyakubja, also known as Kannauj, his main capital.

Harsha's rise to power was a very difficult journey. He became king when he was only 16 years old. His elder brother, Rajyavardhana, had been killed by a king named Shashanka. Harsha also had to rescue his sister, Rajyashri, who had been captured. After these hard events, he took the throne in April 606. He was given the title of Maharajadhiraja by an assembly of leaders. He worked hard to bring peace to the region. This helped his empire grow into a vast and wealthy realm.

Life in Harsha's empire was full of many different people.

His court was a place where scholars and artists gathered. A famous traveler from China named Xuanzang visited him. Xuanzang wrote that Harsha was a very fair and generous ruler. He even called the king Shiladitya in his writings. However, Harsha did face some hard battles during his reign. He tried to expand his land into the southern peninsula. He fought the Emperor Pulakeshin II at the Battle of Narmada. This battle stopped his expansion, and the river became a border.

Harsha had many different religious interests. He was a follower of the Hindu god Shiva. His records call him a supreme devotee of Shiva. At the same time, he was a great supporter of Buddhism. Xuanzang said that Harsha built many tall stupas along the Ganges river. These stupas were many hundreds of feet high. He also built hospices, which are places for travelers to rest. He banned the slaughter of animals for food. Every five years, he held a massive religious assembly called Moksha.

Beyond being a king, Harsha was also a talented writer. He is believed to have written three plays in Sanskrit. These plays are named Ratnavali, Nagananda, and Priyadarsika. Some people think his court poet wrote them, but others believe Harsha wrote them himself. His life has even been shown in movies. In 1926, a silent film called Samrat Shiladitya was made about him. His story shows how one leader can change a whole region. He remains a very important figure in the history of India.
