Its people called their home Kambuja. This empire lasted for hundreds of years, from 802 to 1431 AD. At its height, it ruled most of mainland Southeast Asia. It even reached far north toward southern China. The empire is often called the Angkor period. This name comes from its famous capital city, Angkor.

They built a huge network of canals and reservoirs. These were called hydraulic cities because they used water to thrive. This system was the largest in the world before the industrial age. It helped farmers grow plenty of food for everyone.

By the 13th century, the region was very crowded. Some estimates say 700,000 to 900,000 people lived there. This made Angkor one of the biggest cities in the medieval world.

People worked in markets and lived in busy cities.

The empire began with a prince named Jayavarman II. Around 781, he made Indrapura his first capital. In 802 AD, he held a grand ritual on Mount Mahendraparvata. This mountain is now known as Phnom Kulen. At this ceremony, he named himself a "universal ruler."

These leaders helped the empire become a center of culture.

The empire eventually began to fade away. Scholars still debate why this happened. One reason might be the changing weather. The region had very strong monsoon rains for a time.

After the rain, a very long drought hit the land. This dry weather damaged the water systems the people relied on. The water did not flow as it should have. This made it hard to live in the big cities.
