It lasted from the year 802 to 1431. A prince named Jayavarman II started it all. He became a ruler on a sacred mountain. The people called their land Kambuja.

As time passed, the empire grew very large. It reached as far north as southern China. The kings built many grand stone temples. One famous king, Suryavarman II, built Angkor Wat.

This helped them grow food for many people. At its peak, the cities were very full.

Later, the empire began to change. The weather became hard to live with. There were very heavy rains. Then, there were long times with no rain. This dry weather hurt their water systems. Because of this, many people moved away. The empire slowly came to an end.
