The Majapahit empire was a powerful Hindu-Buddhist land in Southeast Asia. It was based on the island of Java in modern-day Indonesia. This empire was a thalassocracy, which means it gained strength through the sea. At its largest, it covered much of the Nusantara archipelago. This area stretched across parts of Asia and Oceania. Many historians see it as a model for the modern borders of Indonesia.

The name Majapahit comes from a type of fruit. This fruit grows near the capital and has a very bitter taste. Legend says that workers clearing a forest found these trees. They ate the fruit and named the new village after it. While the name originally meant the capital city, people now use it for the whole empire. The empire was also known by other names in Sanskrit.

Raden Wijaya started the empire in 1293. He rose to power after a Mongol invasion of Java. He first allied with the Mongol army to defeat a local ruler named Jayakatwang. After that victory, he turned against his former allies. He then became the first king, also called Kertarajasa Jayawardhana. His reign was not always easy due to several rebellions.

The empire reached its peak in the mid-14th century. This was during the time of Queen Tribhuvana and her son, Hayam Wuruk. A famous prime minister named Gajah Mada also helped lead the empire. According to a book written in 1365, the empire had 98 tributary states. These lands stretched from Sumatra all the way to New Guinea. This included parts of Malaysia, Singapore, and the Philippines.

We know about Majapahit through many different clues. Archaeologists found ruins and canals in the Trowulan area. These canals show how the capital was organized. Historians also study old stone inscriptions and metal plates. These records tell us about kings, religion, and daily life. We also have palm-leaf manuscripts and reports from Chinese explorers like Zheng He.

Eventually, the empire began to decline. A civil war made it much harder to control its many states. The empire finally collapsed in 1527 after an invasion by the Sultanate of Demak. This change led to the rise of new Islamic kingdoms on the island of Java. Even though the empire ended, its history remains very important today.
