The Mataram Sultanate was a major kingdom on the island of Java. It was the last large independent group of people there before the Dutch arrived. The kingdom grew from the middle of Central Java. It stayed a strong power from the late 1500s until the early 1700s. People often called their land Bhumi Jawa. The name Mataram actually describes a specific area of plains. This area is near places like Yogyakarta and Prambanan. The capital was located in a place called Kota Gede.

This kingdom began with a leader named Sutawijaya. He founded the capital at Kota Gede in 1582. Before this, Mataram was ruled by a place called Pajang. Sutawijaya was the son of Kyai Gedhe Pamanahan. His family had worked for the rulers of Pajang. After some power struggles in Pajang, Sutawijaya took control. He fought many battles to make Mataram free. By 1586, the old kingdom of Pajang was gone. This allowed the Mataram Sultanate to rise as a new power.

Mataram reached its peak under Sultan Agung. He ruled from 1613 to 1646. This time was known as a golden age. Sultan Agung wanted to unite almost all of Java. He was a very skilled military leader. He captured many port cities along the northern coast. One of his hardest battles was against the city of Surabaya. He did not use a direct attack to win. Instead, he used a siege to block the city. He stopped food from entering by land and sea.

Sultan Agung also tried to take Batavia from the Dutch. This happened in 1628. The Dutch were part of the company called the VOC. The campaign was very difficult for the Mataram army. They tried to build rice barns to feed their troops. They even used ships filled with rice to help. However, Dutch spies found these supplies and burned them. Without enough food, many soldiers suffered from hunger. The attempt to take Batavia failed.

After Sultan Agung died in 1645, the kingdom began to change. It lost its power and its land over time. The Dutch East India Company became much stronger. By the middle of the 1700s, the Dutch held much control. In 1749, Mataram became a vassal state. This means it had to follow the rules of the Dutch company. The era of a fully independent Mataram had come to an end.
