The Mataram kingdom was a grand and wealthy land on the island of Java. It flourished between the 8th and 11th centuries. This kingdom is also called the Medang kingdom. It was a place where Hindu and Buddhist cultures lived together. The people built a very sophisticated and refined civilization. They were quite well populated and prosperous during their peak.

This kingdom was very important to the history of Southeast Asia.

Life in Mataram relied on a few key things to work well. Most people worked in agriculture, especially through extensive rice farming. Later on, the kingdom also grew through maritime trade by the sea. This wealth helped them build a complex society with a rich culture. They used a system called Sima to manage their land. Sima was land used for rice farming that was set aside by royal orders. The taxes from this land helped pay for building and keeping up religious buildings.

The history of the kingdom began with a leader named King Sanjaya. He established the kingdom in Southern Central Java around the year 717 CE. A famous stone called the Canggal inscription tells his story. It says he ruled a land called Yawadwipa that had much rice and gold. Sanjaya's reign brought peace and prosperity to his people. Later, the kingdom was ruled by the Shailendra dynasty and then the Ishana dynasty.

Mataram is famous for its incredible art and huge stone temples. Many of these temples are near the modern city of Yogyakarta. Some of the most notable temples include Kalasan, Sewu, Borobudur, and Prambanan. Borobudur is actually the largest single Buddhist structure in the whole world.

We know about Mataram today because of many different clues. Archaeologists find ancient structures called candi, which are temples. They also find relics like the Wonoboyo hoard. Scientists study bas reliefs, which are carvings on temple walls. These carvings show scenes of palace life, markets, and even ships.
