During his youth, many big changes happened in Java. The British invaded the land at one point. Later, the Dutch took control again. Diponegoro lived a very religious life. He was a devout Muslim. This made him feel differently about the royal court. He did not like how the Dutch influenced the leaders there.

Many things led to a large rebellion. In 1821, famine and plague spread across Java. In 1822, Mount Merapi erupted. These events made people feel that big changes were coming. Farmers were also unhappy because of high taxes. Local nobles were upset because the Dutch took their land rights. Diponegoro was seen by many as a just ruler. He led a movement to fight for his people.

The Java War began in 1825. It lasted for five years. Diponegoro used guerrilla warfare to fight the Dutch. This means his troops used quick attacks and then hid. At first, the Dutch had a hard time. They did not have a good plan for this kind of fighting. They eventually sent General De Kock to stop the rebellion. De Kock used fortified camps to control the land.
