Angkor Wat is the largest religious complex in the whole world.

Located in the ancient capital of Angkor, it is a very special place in Cambodia. The name "Angkor Wat" comes from the Khmer language. It means "Temple City" or "City of Temples."

The site is famous for its huge scale and beautiful carvings. These carvings are called bas-reliefs and they cover many walls. The design of the temple is meant to represent Mount Meru. This is a sacred mountain in both Hindu and Buddhist traditions.

The temple has a very specific and organized layout. A wide moat of water surrounds the entire complex. An outer wall keeps the inner areas safe. Inside the walls, there are three galleries that rise higher and higher. These lead toward the center, where five towers stand together.

Most temples in this region face the east. However, Angkor Wat is unusual because it faces the west. This unique direction makes the temple stand out from others built by the Khmer people.

A Khmer king named Suryavarman II ordered the temple to be built.

Construction began around 1122 CE and finished by 1150 CE. At first, it was a Hindu temple for the god Vishnu. Some people think the king also wanted it to be his mausoleum, or a place to honor him after death. Later, in the late 13th century, the temple changed. It gradually became a center for Theravada Buddhism. It has remained a place for Buddhist worship for many hundreds of years.

Many different people have visited or studied the temple over time.

In the 14th and 15th centuries, travelers like Zheng He visited the site. In the 1500s, Portuguese traders found the stone city hidden in the forest. Later, a French explorer named Henri Mouhot helped make the site famous in the West. Today, the temple is a major place for travelers to visit. More than 2.5 million people come to see it every year. It is also a very important national symbol for Cambodia.

Keeping the temple safe is a big job for many countries.

In 1992, it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Many groups, like the Archaeological Survey of India and teams from France and Japan, help with repairs. They work to fix damage from plants, weather, and even old wars.

Some parts of the stone were even hurt by art thieves. Now, organizations like APSARA work to protect the beautiful carvings and towers. They want to make sure the temple stays strong for a long time.
