Tantra is a deep tradition of ideas and practices. It started in the Indian subcontinent a long time ago. This began around the middle of the 1st millennium CE. It grew within groups like Shaivism and Shaktism. Later, it also appeared in Mahayana Buddhism and Vaishnavism.

Many people use tantra to understand the world. It offers a way to see the body as divine. This means the body is holy and sacred. Practitioners often look for a union between Shiva and Shakti. They may seek goals like Siddhi, which means supernatural accomplishment.

How does this tradition work for its followers? It uses a method called sadhana to guide them. This includes many different steps and tools. People might use diksha to begin their path. They also use rituals, yoga, and meditation called dhyana. Some use mantras, which are sacred words or sounds. Others use mudras, which are special hand gestures.

They might also use yantras or mandalas. These are special shapes or designs used in practice. These tools help people with bodily purification. They can also help with divine self-creation.

The word tantra has a very old history. The name comes from a Sanskrit root that means "to weave." It can also mean a loom or a warp.

This idea is like weaving different threads together. In very old texts, it means a main part or a model. For example, the Rigveda mentions the word as a weaving device. Later, in Buddhism and Hinduism, it became a way to group books. Some Buddhist texts are called tantras or sutras. This shows how the word can have many meanings.

Tantra has spread to many different places and groups. In Buddhism, it is known as the Vajrayana tradition. This includes Indo-Tibetan and Japanese Shingon Buddhism. It also includes Chinese Esoteric and Nepalese Newar Buddhism.

These ideas have influenced art in many lands. You can see it in Tibetan and East Asian art. It also appears in the cave temples of India. Even traditions like Jainism and Shinto have been influenced.

These connections show how much the tradition matters.

It is important to understand what tantra is not. Some people in the West think it is only about sex. However, scholars say these practices are actually quite rare. They are only for special people who have been initiated. These practices are meant for spiritual growth, not for pleasure.

Tantra also helps shape how people build temples. Many Hindu temples follow tantric designs. The way people perform puja, or worship, is also influenced.
