Some people also call it a tantric feast. It is a way for people to meet for spiritual practice. This practice is known as sadhana. During these meetings, people might chant mantras or use hand signs called mudras. They may also make offerings or perform rituals. These gatherings help create a sacred space called a mandala. This space is like a holy map made by the group.

In the Hindu tradition, these feasts often focus on five specific things. These are known as the panchamakara or the "five Ms." The five elements include meat, fish, grain, wine, and sexual intercourse. Different groups handle these elements in different ways. Some followers are called vāmācārins, or left-hand path practitioners. They might use these five things in a literal way. Other followers are called dakṣiṇācārins, or right-hand path practitioners. They use these things as symbols for meditation instead.

History tells us many things about where these ideas come from. A writer named John Woodroffe wrote about these traditions in 1918. He said the elements are related to the Five Elements. There is also a connection to a group called the Mahasiddhas. This group had roots in many different Buddhist and Hindu traditions. These traditions were often kept secret by special teachers. Some of these practices come from non-monastic groups as well. They belong to a complex web of many different views.

In Tibetan Buddhism, the feast is called a tsok. People often offer a tsok to deities or gurus. They might do this on the tenth day of the lunar month. They might also do it on the twenty-fifth lunar day. They might offer it to figures like Padmasambhava or Yeshe Tsogyal. Some practitioners use the feast to help hungry spirits. They leave food as an offering to help these entities. In a practice called Chöd, a person imagines a very special feast. They visualize offering their own body to help all living beings.

Today, you can find these practices in several different faiths. They are used in Hinduism and Vajrayāna Buddhism. They are also found in the Bön tradition. These different groups all use the gathering to reach spiritual goals. Some people use symbols to change their inner selves. Others use physical things to help them transform. Even though they use different methods, the goal is spiritual. It is a way to connect with the sacred through a group.
