A dark retreat is a very special way to practice faith.

It happens in a space with no light at all. This practice belongs to Tibetan Buddhism and the Bön religion. It is an advanced way to study spiritual ideas. Some people use these retreats to reach a state called the rainbow body. They also use them to help them through the bardo. The bardo is a state people face at the time of death.

How does a dark retreat work for a person? The room is specially prepared to seal out every bit of light. This creates a state called sensory deprivation. This means the senses do not get much information from the outside. Because of this, a person might see many things. They may see small, unstructured spots of light. These might look like tiny sparks or even fireflies.

Eventually, these lights can grow into visions of deities. They might even see a luminous goddess called the Great Seal.

There are two main systems that use these dark rooms. The first is called Kalacakra. It uses a set of six yogas, or special steps. The second system is called Dzogchen. Dzogchen is part of the Great Perfection tradition. It uses a unique system of luminous energy channels. These channels move through the inside of the body. These channels are what help create the visions.

Both systems use darkness to help people see these things.

These traditions have many old books and teachers. The Kalacakra system is found in the Stainless Light Commentary. The Dzogchen system is in the Tantra of the Blazing Lamps. This book is one of the Seventeen Tantras. The Bön religion also has the Advice on the Six Lamps. This includes a commentary by Drugom Gyalwa Yungdrung. These texts explain how the dark retreats should work. They provide the rules for these deep practices.

Not everyone can do a dark retreat. It is a restricted practice for senior spiritual practitioners. These people must have a teacher to guide them. A person must be very stable in their natural state. The time spent in the dark can vary a lot. Some people stay for only a few hours. Others might stay in the dark for many decades. Modern practitioners like Ayu Khandro and Dilgo Khyentse have done this. Ayu Khandro practiced the Yang-Ti, which is a version of the dark retreat.
