Tummo is a special practice found in Tibetan Buddhism. The word tummo means "inner fire" in Tibetan.

It can also mean a "fierce woman." This idea is linked to a fierce goddess of heat and passion. Many people use tummo to help their spiritual growth. It is part of teachings like the Six Dharmas of Naropa. Practitioners use it to gain control over their body processes. This happens during a stage called Anuyoga or highest yoga tantra. The goal is to reach a state of deep clarity and bliss.

To practice tummo, people follow a specific way of working. They sit with a straight back to begin. The method uses a technique called vase breath. This means breathing deeply through the nose and holding it.

While breathing, they visualize the body's energy system. This system includes channels, winds, drops, and chakras. They might imagine a tiny seed syllable at each chakra. One very important shape is the "Ah" stroke at the navel. This helps the vital winds enter the central channel.

History shows that many different groups have taught tummo. It appears in many ancient texts like the Hevajra Tantra. Different lineages have their own ways of teaching it. For example, the Kagyu lineage uses manuals like Closely Stringed Pearls. This text describes how to see the different chakras. Gampopa was a teacher who presented these ideas. Another important figure is Tsongkhapa from the Gelug lineage. He described tummo as a foundation for other spiritual practices. He taught how to merge inner heat with meditation on emptiness.

There are many specific details about the body's energy. Practitioners visualize three channels that are red, white, and blue. They also focus on four main chakras. The navel chakra has 64 spokes. The heart chakra has 8 spokes. The throat chakra has 16 spokes.

The top of the head has a chakra with 32 spokes. As the energy moves, it can create four different types of bliss. These include supreme bliss and innate bliss. These feelings are used to help understand the concept of emptiness.

Scientists have also been curious about how tummo works. They have studied how it affects the human body. In 1982, a study looked at three monks. These monks practiced tummo every day for six years. They lived in unheated stone sheds. Researchers found that their skin temperatures went up quite a bit. One monk's toe temperature increased by 7 degrees Celsius. Another monk's finger temperature rose by 7.2 degrees. Other studies have looked at how the brain and metabolism change. This shows that the practice has real effects on the body.
