A dark retreat is a special way to practice faith.

People stay in a room with no light. This is part of Tibetan Buddhism and Bön. These are old ways of belief.

Some people stay in the dark for a few hours. Others stay for many years. This is for very wise and senior people. They must have a teacher to guide them. This practice helps them prepare for the time of death.

Being in the dark can lead to visions. A vision is something a person sees. At first, people might see small spots of light. These look like sparks or fireflies. Later, the lights may look like gods.

Two systems use these dark rooms. One is called Kalacakra. It uses six yogas, or special steps. Another is called Dzogchen. It uses a system of light energy inside the body. Both ways use dark rooms to help people see. Some believe this helps them reach a rainbow body.
