A vision is a special experience. People may see them in a dream. They might see them during a trance. They can also happen in religious ecstasy. These sights often show a supernatural appearance. This appearance usually carries a revelation. A revelation is a way to learn a secret truth.

Visions are often very clear. They are different from regular dreams. Many people think visions show human nature. They might also show how reality works. Some people even link visions to prophecy. Prophecy is when someone tells the future.

There are three main ways to have a vision. Evelyn Underhill helped categorize these types. First, there are intellectual visions. These happen in the mind. The mind gets a deep grasp of a truth. You do not use your physical senses for this.

Second, there are imaginary visions. In these, you do not see or hear anything. However, your mind feels a strong impression. It feels as if you saw a real object. Third, there are corporeal visions. These are seen by the eyes of the body. A figure might actually be present. Or, a higher power might change how you see.

History is full of stories about visions. Many of these stories come from ancient times. Jeremiah saw an almond tree branch. He also saw a boiling pot from the north. Isaiah saw a vision about Jerusalem. In the 6th century BC, Ezekiel saw a vision of God. Daniel also had a vision in the 6th or 2nd century BC.

These early stories are part of many traditions. They help people understand their faith. They often involve figures from holy books. These visions have shaped many different belief systems.

Many famous people had visions through the years. Paul the Apostle saw Jesus in the 1st century. Constantine saw a sign from Christ in 312 AD. Saint Fursey saw angels in the 7th century. In 1654, Blaise Pascal had a vision on November 23. Joseph Smith had a vision in 1820.

In 1829, three men saw golden plates. They were Oliver Cowdery, David Whitmer, and Martin Harris. They said an angel showed them the plates. They also heard a voice from heaven. This is a very well-documented vision.

Different visions connect to many different ideas. Some visions focus on the afterlife. Perpetua and Felicity had these in the 2nd century AD. Others connect to science or nature. René Descartes had dreams in 1619. These dreams changed his life in science. Jakob Böhme saw sunlight in a dish in 1600. Nat Turner saw an eclipse in 1831. He saw it as a hand covering the sun. These stories show how visions impact people. They can change how people live and think.
