Many traditions use special practices to help people change. Some people want to feel a close bond with a god. Others seek to become one with everything that exists. This is often called a unitive experience. Some people even seek a feeling of nothingness. This idea is found in traditions like Buddhism and Kabbalah.

How does this work for a person? It can involve many different states of mind. Some people use prayer to feel a holy presence. Others seek an intuitive understanding of the world. This can feel like a sudden flash of insight. It might help them solve a personal problem. In Buddhism, these moments are called enlightenment. Other names include bodhi, kensho, or satori.

The word has very old roots in the Greek language. It comes from a word meaning "to close" or "to conceal."

In ancient times, it referred to secret religious rituals. To learn these secrets, a person had to be an initiate. This meant they joined a special group through certain rites. These followers were often called mystikos. Some even followed the god Dionysus Bacchus. They sought to identify closely with their deity.

History shows that the meaning of mysticism has changed. In the 13th century, people used the term unio mystica. This referred to a spiritual marriage or a feeling of ecstasy.

In the 19th century, thinkers like William James studied it more. James lived from 1842 to 1910. He wrote about religious experiences in his book. He believed these experiences were very important to people. He thought they were as real as our five senses.

Today, scholars still debate what mysticism really is. Some say it is a way to find hidden truths. Others think the term is too broad or confusing. It can link to many different belief systems. You can find it in Sufism, Hinduism, and Western traditions. It can happen within a religious group. It can also happen to people on their own. It is a way of looking at the world with wonder.
