Religious ecstasy is a very special way of feeling. It is a state of mind where a person feels less aware of the world around them. Instead, they feel a huge sense of joy or deep spiritual awareness inside. This feeling can happen very quickly or last for many days. Some people might even have these experiences many times in their lives.

People often describe seeing visions or feeling very happy. This state is often called a mystical experience by some thinkers.

Different traditions have their own ways to reach this state. In Buddhism, people use meditation to find mental oneness. This can be part of a state called jhana. There are eight different states of trance in the Pali Canon. Some of these are about material things and others are not. In Sufism, this feeling is known as wajd. In ancient Yoga, there are many stages of ecstasy. The highest stage is called nirvikalpa samādhi.

In ancient Greece, ecstasy was part of the Dionysian Mysteries. This was a way for people to feel connected to the god Dionysus. These rites were special because they were open to all women. It did not matter how much wealth they had. Women would dance and sing together in groups. They often wore ivy wreaths on their heads and danced barefoot. They used music from drums and flutes to help them enter this state.

Many famous people in history have talked about these feelings. Saint Teresa of Avila was a famous person who had these experiences. Another person was Saint Rose of Lima, who was canonized in 1671. In some Christian groups today, people feel the Holy Spirit in unusual ways. They might laugh loudly or cry. Some people even claim to see things like gold dust or angel feathers. These experiences can be very intense for the people involved.

People have many different ideas about why ecstasy happens. Some believe it is a way to be one with God. In the monotheistic tradition, it is seen as a way to connect with the divine. Others might see it as a personal experience that only matters to that one person. In the past, some people even argued about where these feelings came from. They wondered if they came from God or something else. It is a topic that people still wonder about today.
