It often happens during religious acts. People may feel a deep sense of joy. They might also see visions. Some people feel less aware of the world around them. This can happen for a short time. It can also last for many days.

In old Greece, people used music to find this state. They used drums and flutes. They also used dancing. Some women, called Maenads, followed the god Dionysus. They wore ivy wreaths on their heads.

Many different faiths have these experiences. In Buddhism, people use meditation to find a state of oneness. In some Christian groups, people feel the Holy Spirit. They may cry or laugh out loud.

Some people even claim to see gold dust or feathers. In Sufism, a term called wajd is used. People have many different ideas about where these feelings come from. Some think they come from a god. Others think they come from within.
