Nondualism is a big idea used in many different ways. It is a term from Indian philosophy and religion. The word means "not two."

Many people use it to talk about a special state of awareness. This state is thought to be beyond normal thinking. It is like a background field of unity. This field exists before we start naming things in our minds. Some thinkers call this a way to see the true state of affairs.

How this idea works can vary depending on the tradition. One way is to stop thinking in pairs. These pairs are often called binary opposites. Examples include good and evil or self and other.

Another way is to look at the observer and the observed. Usually, we feel like we are separate from what we see. Nondualism suggests the person watching and the thing being watched are not separate. It can also mean seeing the world as one big whole. This is the idea that all things are interconnected.

This way of thinking has a very long history. The English term comes from Sanskrit words like "advaita" and "advaya." The word "advaita" is often used in Hindu traditions. It suggests that only Brahman is truly real. The rest of the world is seen as a collection of thoughts.

In Buddhism, the term "advaya" is used in many ways. It is found in schools like Madhyamaka and Yogachara. These traditions use it to talk about emptiness or truth.

There are many specific names and dates to know. In 1879, Friedrich Müller published the Sacred Books of the East. He helped bring these ideas to Western readers. He often translated "advaita" as "monism."

Some scholars, like Alan Watts, say monism is different. He thought nondualism goes even further than monism. Other thinkers like David Loy look at "five flavors" of nonduality. These include the idea that the subject and object are not different.

This helps explain how different religions view the same unity.

Nondualism links to many things we already know about. It is very close to the idea of mysticism. Many people use the word as a synonym for spirituality.

It is also related to the idea of holism. Holism is the belief that everything in the world is part of a whole. Some people find these same feelings in Taoism or Sufism. Even Christian mysticism shares some of these views of unity. It is a way to explore how we fit into the universe.
