Have you ever wondered if everything in the universe is actually just one single thing? This big idea is known as monism.

The word comes from a way of thinking that looks for unity. Some people use a wide definition for monism. They believe all things come from one shared source. Others use a stricter definition. This version says everything must share the same substance and essence. It is a way to explain how the many things we see are connected.

There are many different ways to look at how monism works. Substance monism says many things can be made from one single reality. For example, everything might be made of just matter or just mind. Some thinkers believe in existence monism. This is the view that only one concrete object actually exists. Others follow priority monism. This idea says the whole world is more important than its small parts. In this view, parts are just fragments of a larger, integrated whole.

People have explored these ideas for a very long time. Long ago, pre-Socratic philosophers tried to find the basic principle of the universe. Thales argued that water was the basis of everything. Anaximenes claimed that air was the main part. Heraclitus believed that fire represented constant change. Later, the thinker Parmenides described the world as a single, unmoving "One." Zeno of Elea also defended this idea using famous paradoxes. He wanted to show that motion and time might be illusions.

History shows many famous names attached to these thoughts. In the 17th century, René Descartes spoke about dualism, which is the opposite of monism. Baruch Spinoza later argued that "God or Nature" is the only substance. He believed these two things were interchangeable. In the 18th century, Christian von Wolff introduced the term monism to philosophy. He used it to explain how one principle could unite mind and body. Even in modern times, many neuroscientists study how the mind and brain work together.

Monism also connects to many different religious traditions. In Hinduism, some scholars look at Advaita Vedanta as a form of absolute monism. This is often called nondualism. Another idea is pantheism. Pantheists believe the universe and a god are the same thing. This was made popular by the work of Spinoza. There is also panentheism, which is slightly different. This belief says the divine is in every part of nature but is not the same as nature.
