Brahman is a central idea in Hindu philosophy. It represents the ultimate reality of the universe. Many thinkers call it the highest universal principle. It is the origin and cause of all that exists. Everything in existence proceeds from Brahman. Eventually, everything returns to it.

How Brahman works depends on the school of thought. In non-dual schools like Advaita Vedanta, Brahman is everywhere. It is inside every living being. In this view, the substance of Brahman is the same as Atman, or the Self. Dualistic schools like Dvaita Vedanta see things differently. They believe Brahman is different from the Atman in each person.

The idea of Brahman has changed over a very long time. It first appeared in the Vedas during the late second millennium BCE. In those early Vedic times, Brahman was linked to the power of sound. It was the power found in words, verses, and rituals. Later, the concept expanded in the Upanishads. It grew to include deeper ideas about the essence of the universe.

Many specific terms and names are used in these traditions. The word Brahman comes from a Sanskrit root meaning to expand or grow. It is a gender-neutral concept. This is different from Brahmā, who is a creator god in the Hindu trinity. Brahman is also described as a primordial reality. It creates, sustains, and withdraws the entire universe. Some see it as a divine being or a Lord.

Brahman connects to many parts of life and art. For example, the swan is a symbol for the link between Brahman and Atman. Many different deities are seen as aspects of this one reality. People use the study of Brahman to seek spiritual liberation. This is the knowledge that leads to freedom. It helps people understand the truth of a person beyond their differences.
