The Vedas are a huge collection of ancient religious texts from India.

They are the oldest scriptures in the Hindu tradition. The word Veda comes from a Sanskrit root meaning "to know." This means the word itself represents knowledge or wisdom. Many Hindus view these texts as "apauruṣeya." This term means they are not of a human maker. Instead, people believe they are superhuman or authorless. They are seen as sacred sounds heard by sages during deep meditation.

There are four main Vedas in this collection. These are the Rigveda, the Yajurveda, the Samaveda, and the Atharvaveda. Each one is divided into four smaller sections. The Samhitas are collections of mantras and hymns. The Brahmanas are prose texts that explain rituals and ceremonies. The Aranyakas are called "forest texts" for those who meditate in the woods. Finally, the Upanishads are books that discuss philosophy and spiritual knowledge.

These sections help explore deep ideas like the soul and the cosmos.

History shows that these texts were shared by speaking for a long time. This oral tradition began in the second millennium BCE. People used special memory techniques to keep the words exact. The oldest part, the Rigveda, was composed in northwest India. This happened between 1500 and 1200 BCE. The other three Samhitas were written a bit later. They date to the time of the Kuru kingdom around 1200 to 900 BCE. This long history helped shape the culture of ancient India.

Many important facts are found within these ancient pages. The Samhitas contain prayers to gods like Indra and Agni. These prayers ask for success in battles or for the welfare of a group. One collection of mantras contains about 89,000 metrical feet. Of these, 72,000 are found in the four main Samhitas. The Brahmanas were written between 900 BCE and 700 BCE. The Upanishads were composed between 800 BCE and the end of the Vedic period. These dates show how the ideas grew and changed over many centuries.

The Vedas are part of a system called "shruti." This word means "what is heard." It is different from "smriti," which means "what is remembered." Many Indian philosophies are called "orthodox" because they accept the Vedas. Other traditions, like Buddhism and Jainism, are called "non-orthodox." They do not view the Vedas as the final authority. Even today, the ideas in the Upanishads remain very important. They continue to influence how many people think about the self and the world.
