The Brahmanas are ancient collections of sacred knowledge. They are attached to the four Vedas, which are collections of hymns and mantras.

You can think of them as guidebooks for the sacred songs. They explain the meaning behind the words and the symbols used. These texts also teach how to perform rituals called yajna.

They help people understand the connection between humans and nature. This includes the five elements and different sources of energy.

These books work by giving very specific instructions. They are often divided into two main parts. The first part is called vidhi, which contains rules for rituals. The second part is called arthavada, which provides explanatory remarks.

These texts also teach important scientific ideas. They include lessons on geometry used for building altars. They also contain knowledge about observational astronomy. Some Brahmanas even hold mystical or philosophical ideas. These ideas are sometimes found in the Aranyakas and Upanishads.

Most of these texts were shared through speech for a long time. People memorized them and passed them down through generations. This way of learning is called Svādhyāya. Because they were oral for so long, the exact dates they were written are still debated.

The oldest Brahmanas date back to about 900 BCE. The most recent ones were written around 700 BCE. Today, less than twenty of these Brahmanas still exist. Many others have been lost or destroyed over the centuries.

Different Vedas have their own specific Brahmanas. For example, the Rigveda has the Aitareya and Kausitaki Brahmanas.

The Samaveda has the Sadvimsa and the Chandogya. The Yajurveda includes the Shatapatha, which has two versions called Madhyandina and Kanva. The Atharvaveda has the Gopatha, which is the only one still around for that Veda. Each of these is linked to a specific school or Shakha. Scholars use many different names and abbreviations to study them.

Precision is a huge part of these traditions. When priests perform a ritual, they must use exact pronunciation. Even a small change in a sound can change a word's meaning.

One text says a perfect mantra is infallible. However, a single mistake could make it powerless. This focus on perfect sound helped keep the knowledge safe. It allowed the Vedas to be preserved even before writing was common.
