The Brahmanas are special ancient texts.

They are attached to the four Vedas. These are very old collections of sacred songs and prayers. The Brahmanas explain the meaning of those songs. They also give rules for rituals.

Priests use these books to guide their work. They must follow exact steps during a ritual. They must also use the right sounds when they speak. If a priest says a word wrong, it might change the meaning. This makes the ritual lose its power.

These books teach more than just rituals. They contain lessons on math and stars. They also have many old stories and legends. Some Brahmanas include deep ideas about the world. These ideas are found in parts called Aranyakas and Upanishads. Most of these books are lost to time. Only about twenty still exist today. They were once passed down by people speaking from memory.

They were not written down for a long time. This helped keep the knowledge safe for many years.
