Most scholars think people wrote these songs long ago. They may have lived between 1500 and 1000 BCE. For a long time, people did not write them down. Instead, they used their memory. Teachers taught students the songs by heart. They kept the sounds very exact. It is like a living tape recording from the past.

The Rigveda has ten main books. It contains 1,028 hymns. These hymns have about 10,600 verses. Some songs praise the gods. Other songs ask big questions. They ask how the universe began. They ask where the sun hides at night.

Many people still use these songs today. They are recited at weddings and funerals. This makes it a very old tradition that is still used.
