They are part of the Vedas. The Vedas are the oldest holy books for Hindus. These texts show a change in how people thought. Earlier Vedic texts focused on rituals and ceremonies. The Upanishads focus on new ideas. They explore meditation and the mind.

Many of these books ask big questions. They look at the link between people and the universe. They talk about Atman and Brahman. Atman is the self. Brahman is the highest reality.

The word Upanishad has a special meaning. It can mean "sitting near" a teacher. This is how students learned the ideas. For a long time, people memorized them. They passed the words down by speaking.

Most people do not know who wrote them. Some people believe they were not made by humans. They may have been made by wise sages. Some sages like Yajnavalkya are named in the texts. Even women like Gargi are part of the stories. Scholars are not sure exactly when they were written. They cover many centuries in ancient India.
