They are the oldest scriptures of the Hindu faith. The word Veda means "knowledge" in Sanskrit. Many Hindus believe these texts are "apauruṣeya." This means they were not made by humans. Instead, they believe wise sages heard these sacred sounds during deep meditation.

There are four main parts called Vedas. These are the Rigveda, Yajurveda, Samaveda, and Atharvaveda. Each Veda has four smaller parts. The Samhitas are collections of hymns or songs. The Brahmanas explain how to do special rituals. The Aranyakas are texts for people who meditate in the forest. The Upanishads are books about deep ideas and philosophy.

These Upanishads are very famous today. They talk about the inner self and the cosmic self. For a long time, people shared these texts by speaking them aloud. This helped keep the words the same for many years.
