It is the fourth Veda in the Hindu tradition. For a long time, people only recognized three Vedas. The Atharvaveda was accepted much later. It is made of 20 books. These books hold 730 hymns and about 6,000 stanzas. Most of the text is written in verse. One sixth of the text is prose, or regular writing.

Many people call it a book of magic. However, some scholars say this is not quite right. It is a book about daily life. It includes rituals for marriage and funerals. It also has rites for starting school. Some parts talk about healing and medicine. These parts use herbs and nature. The text also has deep ideas. It includes three Upanishads. These are texts about philosophy, or big ideas. One idea is monism. This is the belief in the oneness of all life. Two versions of the text have survived. One is called the Shaunakiya. The other is the Paippalada. A well-preserved version of the Paippalada was found in 1957.
