People have a very old way of singing sacred songs. These are called Vedic chants. This tradition is one of the oldest in the world. It has stayed the same for a very long time. Many people believe the power of these songs is in their sound. They think the whole world began with a sound.

To keep the songs perfect, people use eleven ways to chant. These ways are called pathas. Some are simple, like saying words one by one. Others are very hard. One style is called Ghana. It is named after a bell. In this style, words go back and forth like a bell ring.

Students must learn the easy ways first. They practice until they know every tone. There are four main tones used in the chants. Scholars who master these ways are called pathins. These special ways of chanting act as a check. They help people remember every single sound and word. This keeps the holy texts safe from mistakes. In 2008, UNESCO called this a masterpiece of human heritage.
