At first, these people lived in small tribes. They moved around with their animals. They lived in a place called the Punjab. Later, they found iron tools. These tools helped them clear thick forests. Now, they could stay in one place to farm. They moved east to the Ganges Plain.

As time passed, tribes joined to make large kingdoms. One was the Kuru kingdom. They made special clay pots. They also had a social system called varna. This system divided people into four groups. Some were priests and leaders. Others were farmers or workers. Eventually, large cities and states began to grow. This marked the end of the Vedic period.
